KathleenLights Made Me Buy It

Hey guys! If you'd like to know where I've been,  you can check out my last post here.

I'd like to start a new series on my blog, similar to the 'YouTube Made Me Buy It' videos that have been floating around on YouTube for quite sometime now, but with a twist, I'd like to focus on one YouTuber at a time. I watch so many amazing 'beauty gurus', 'makeup artists', 'makeup junkies', whatever you'd like to call them, (or what they like to call themselves), that convince me to buy a product for one reason or another. I follow them all for different reasons, whether it be personality alone, skin tone, skin type, hair type, etc.

The first YouTuber in the hot seat is: KathleenLights.

Kathleen has considerable consumer purchasing influence over her viewers, because of her 1.8 million subscribers(which is growing very quickly). This has been clearly demonstrated after her RCMA No Color Powder review went live, it sold out very quickly off multiple sites that carried the product.

If you've been a reader of this blog for awhile, you'd know that Kathleen is my absolute favourite YouTuber, and has been for quite some time. I love her personality, and we also have the same skin tone; exact same foundation shades (when she is not fake tanning), and we have similar makeup preferences, wants etc.

So here are five products that stood out to me, that she 'made' me buy:

Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette - This is Kathleen's number one favourite eyeshadow palette, and I can see why. It smells like chocolate, the shadows blend like a dream, and every shade is very wearable, but not all neutral. This was my first high-end palette purchase, and I choose it because Kathleen said it was the best.

Too Faced Cocoa Contour Kit - This is Kathleen's favourite contour palette (there's a theme here obviously). This palette also smells like chocolate, which is something I love about these Too Faced products. Light cocoa is perfect for brightening under the eyes, and setting concealer, medium cocoa is a great contour shade for me, and dark cocoa is a beautiful warm bronzer. I've done a full review here. I chose this over other contour palettes that are on the market, because 1) if Kathleen loved it, I assumed I would too, 2) it contains the only shades I need, and 3) it was slightly cheaper because it has four shades versus six.

Maybelline Fit Me Concealer - A classic drugstore concealer. It's inexpensive, comparable to some high-end products, blends beautifully, decent shade range. For me, this concealer is my holy grail for under the eyes.

Milani Tantastic Baked Bronzer in Fantastic in Gold - This is the one product I'm mentioning today, that I don't think is the bees knees. It's not bad, just not completely my thing. I don't mind if my bronzer has a bit of shimmer to it, especially in the warmer months. But, this product is so glowy and shimmery, that it would make the perfect warm highlight, but for deep skin tones. I love using this product on my body in the summertime when I have a good tan going, but it just doesn't work for me on the face. Again, a stunning product, but not for someone as fair as me if used as a highlight, and it has too much shimmer for me to like it as a bronzer.

Physicians Formula Bronze Booster in Medium to Dark - This bronzer is fabulous! It warms up the complexion beautifully, is super blendable, and provides a bit of a glow. Physicians Formula is a brand at the drugstore that produces really great bronzers for the most part, so pick this up if you're looking for a great budget bronzer that's not shimmery.

I know this post is quite bronzer heavy, but I was struggling to find a great bronzer and contour shade for my skin tone so I just bought a bunch of her recommendations awhile ago.

If you like the idea of this series, please leave a comment so I know whether to continue. Also, I do have a few ideas of which YouTuber's to do next but, let me know who your favourite YouTuber's are below that you'd like to see next; any excuse to buy more makeup ;) "RESEARCH" haha.

Beauty Haul | Drugstore, ColourPop & Sephora

Hey guys! Miss me? I haven't posted in about a week and a half. Long story short, midterm exams happened, and I've officially launched a YouTube channel to work as a complement to this blog!

So, if you'd like to see similar content that you've been reading here, but in video format, check out my channel emilynmax, and please do subscribe and give lots of feedback! Editing is much harder than I had ever anticipated, I'm still trying to master just cutting out clips and stitching them back together.

Anyway, that was a bit of an update for you. I've linked below my most recent video, which is a big beauty haul! Hope you like it.

January Favourites | 2016

January was a whirlwind! Max and I both had birthdays, and I started back at classes. The year 2016 had a great start; leaps and bounds were made towards my goals this year. However, as I am typing this, I am home from school with no voice and an awful cough, and Max is home from preschool with the flu and a high fever. I am hoping we are both better soon (and I don't get the flu to top off my cold) and that this is not an indication of how the rest of February is going to go.

The products that have received the most love this month are:

Peek Natural Stain Brow Powder in Expresso - This brow powder came in my January Ipsy bag and it is the perfect shade for my brows! I have been using this over my Anastasia Brow Whiz because it looks a bit more natural, yet perfectly fills in any sparse areas. I still love my brow whiz, but I definitely use it on days I want a stronger brow look.

Sephora Collection Small Contour Brush - I got this from my Dad and Step mom in a brush roll for Christmas. It fits perfectly in the hollows of my cheeks. It's dense, but not too much so; it applies and blends out my contour perfectly. It is my favourite contour brush that I have ever used! Unfortunately, I cannot find it sold separately on Sephora's website, but I've linked the brush roll I got it in.

Milani Baked Blush in 05 Luminoso - This blush is such a staple in my collection. I've been preferring a more bronzed look lately to make up for the fact that I'm super pale because it's the middle of winter. I wear this glowy peach shade year-round and goes with every makeup look. It leaves you looking healthy and youthful.

Formula X Base Coat - I know I've mentioned this base coat before but it is just the best I've ever used. As it is quite a tacky product, my nail polish really adheres to it and doesn't chip for much longer than when I use something else. For $13, it's really not much more expensive than many at the drugstore, so I'd rather spend an extra $3-5 for something that works this well. I would like to try something new though, so leave any suggestions below!

Promise Organic Ultra Moisturizing Argan Creme Facial Lotion with Olive Oil - Quite the product name! Another great product that I got in my Ipsy bag in January. I have been dealing with major dry patches around my nose, and around my jawline. This moisturizer has made my skin feel a lot more comfortable. It is for normal to dry skin, so I will not get a lot of use out of this once the weather warms up again as I do have quite oily skin usually. It smells lovely, and is 100% natural.

What have you been loving over the past month?

Family Favourite Chocolate No-Bake Cookies | Recipe

For something a bit different, today I'm sharing with you my family's favourite chocolate cookie recipe. These are super quick and easy to whip up!

My mom used to make these for my brother and I all the time growing up, and I now make these for my family. The recipe is adapted from a 1988 church cookbook called Let's Break Bread Together, which contains recipes from across Canada. The cookbook has seen better days and is falling apart, but the recipes inside are amazing!

Chocolate Macaroons

1/2 cup margarine or butter
2 cups white sugar
1/2 cup milk

Melt butter in large saucepan. Add milk and sugar. Bring to a bubbly boil. Remove from heat.

3 cups quick-cooking oatmeal
1 cup feather-strip or angel-flake coconut
6 tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. vanilla
Pinch of salt

Mix into hot butter mixture thoroughly with a wooden spoon. Drop with spoon onto a waxed paper lined baking sheet. Let sit until hardened.

I would recommend having all the dry ingredients in the second part of the recipe mixed together ahead of time, as you don't have a lot of time to mix it into the butter mixture before it cools down and becomes really difficult to mix.

Please let me know if you try this recipe and how you liked it!
